Delray Medical Center and Dr. Joseph Ricotta First in World to Utilize Retrievable Stent System in Multiple Vessels to Treat Below-the-Knee Arterial Disease

Jul 31, 2025

Delray Medical Center vascular surgeon Dr. Joseph Ricotta is the first physician in the world to utilize the Spur® Peripheral Retrievable Stent System on multiple vessels to treat below-the-knee arterial disease. The Spur Stent System is a unique clinical solution for treating narrowed arteries below the knee after they have been widened with a balloon.

Dr. Ricotta is National Medical Director of Vascular Surgery and Endovascular Therapy for Tenet Healthcare, Professor of Surgery and Vascular Surgery Fellowship Program Director at Florida Atlantic University’s School of Medicine, and founder of the Prime Vascular Institute.

The Spur Stent System is the first and only retrievable stent system that features a self-expanding stent with built-in balloon dilation technology. It’s designed to temporarily support the artery and improve blood flow by widening blockages – all without leaving a permanent implant behind.

This innovation represents a significant step forward in treating patients with peripheral artery disease, particularly those with complex, calcified narrowed arteries in the lower legs.

"This technology allows us to deliver safer, more effective care to patients who previously had limited treatment options,” says Dr. Ricotta. “The Spur Stent System is another tool we can offer our patients with complex conditions to give them their best chance at making a full recovery and getting back to doing the things that they love.”

Dr. Ricotta’s expertise in the field has earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious TCAR Clinical Operator of Excellence distinction from Silk Road Medical in 2020, an award recognizing top physicians for superior outcomes in TCAR procedures. With over two decades of experience, Dr. Ricotta has also been repeatedly recognized as a National Top Doctor by Castle Connolly, voted one of America’s Best Vascular Surgeons by Newsweek Magazine, and has contributed more than 300 peer-reviewed articles to medical literature.
