Palm Beach Health Network Recognizes Five Tenet Heroes for Exemplary Service

Aug 28, 2025

Palm Beach Health Network is proud to recognize five outstanding employees as Tenet Heroes, part of Tenet Healthcare’s annual program that honors individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty. Each year, Tenet nominates Tenet Heroes and Hall of Fame inductees to celebrate those whose selfless actions and extraordinary commitment make a lasting impact on their patients, colleagues, and communities.

“Our Tenet Heroes embody the heart of Palm Beach Health Network,” said Maggie Gill, Group President of Tenet Healthcare’s East Coast Region. “Each of these individuals represents the very best of who we are, dedicated caregivers who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of our patients and in our communities. We are proud to honor their extraordinary contributions and celebrate the meaningful impact they have across Palm Beach County.”

Delray Medical Center – Angelica Ligas, RN, BSN, Care Coordinator

As a bedside nurse in the cath lab and emergency department, Angelica Ligas already served patients with dedication, but she went far beyond her daily duties when she took a leading role in improving the patient care experience across the hospital. A key driver in Delray’s patient satisfaction initiative, Angelica has been instrumental in fostering a culture of compassion and patient-centered care, often named directly in patient reviews for her exceptional service. Through her leadership on the Care Experience Committee, she has helped transform Delray’s culture, creating a ripple effect that continues to inspire her colleagues.

Good Samaritan Medical Center – Shawn Smith, RN, Oncology

Oncology nurse Shawn Smith has brought hope and kindness to countless patients and families. Inspired by the memory of his late brother, Shawn chose oncology nursing as his calling and has since become a beacon of empathy and resilience. Over the holiday season, he personally decorated and delivered Christmas trees to current and former patients, determined to bring joy during difficult times. Beyond the hospital, Shawn volunteers weekly at a local food shelter, serving meals and providing emotional support to those in need. His humility, generosity, and dedication to others make him a shining example of what it means to be a Tenet Hero.

Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center – Marielena “Lena” Miquel, Physical Therapist

Known by her patients as a “miracle worker,” Marielena Miquel has repeatedly demonstrated how exceptional care can change, and even save lives. Her swift recognition of a life-threatening condition in an orthopedic patient recovering from ankle surgery directly led to the detection of a deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolisms, ultimately saving the patient’s life. Beyond acute interventions, Lena has championed women’s health by establishing the hospital’s Pelvic Floor Therapy Program, filling a critical gap in care for the community. She is celebrated not only for her clinical expertise but also for her ability to empower patients with knowledge, confidence, and compassion.

St. Mary’s Medical Center – Trauma and Emergency Department Staff

The Trauma and Emergency Department team at St. Mary’s Medical Center was honored for their exceptional response during one of Palm Beach County’s most tragic events: the day three Sheriff’s Deputies were struck by an oncoming vehicle and rushed to the trauma unit. The team seamlessly coordinated efforts across departments, mobilizing additional staff, equipment, and resources to meet the crisis while continuing to treat dozens of other patients in their care. Their dedication exemplified strength, unity, and compassion in the face of heartbreaking loss. Collectively, the staff embody the mission of providing quality, life-saving care during patients’ most critical moments.

West Boca Medical Center – Joe Nowicki, RN

Courage, integrity, and compassion define Joe Nowicki’s career as a nurse. Known for his positivity and deep sense of purpose, Joe’s care extends beyond the bedside. He has donated more than twenty-two gallons of blood, volunteered with the American Lung Association’s Open Airways Program to educate children about asthma, and continually demonstrates service to others both inside and outside the hospital. A recipient of the DAISY Award in 2024, Joe is admired by colleagues for his loyalty, kindness, and unwavering commitment to patients. His life and work exemplify Tenet Healthcare’s mission to deliver quality, compassionate care.
