Following the news of a hantavirus outbreak on a cruise, Dr. Leslie Diaz talking to the TV station about the virus and how to stay safe. More from the story below:
Experts said there’s no need to panic about this outbreak or cancel any plans for cruise vacations, but it doesn’t hurt to be cautious and stay informed.
“It is something that we've had for years and years and years here in the United States. We see it mostly in the Western communities, like in New Mexico, Nevada, California, I think,” Dr. Leslie Diaz said.
Diaz is the chair of the infection control committee at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center.
She said hantavirus is primarily spread by inhaling contaminated rodent droppings or urine.
Human-to-human transmission is extremely rare.
