Florida Coast Medical Center Successfully Completes First STEMI Case, Expanding Advanced Cardiac Care for the Treasure Coast

Jun 24, 2026

Florida Coast Medical Center has successfully completed its first ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) case, marking a significant milestone in the hospital’s continued expansion of lifesaving cardiovascular services and enhancing emergency heart attack care for residents throughout the Treasure Coast.

The milestone procedure was completed by interventional cardiologist Dr. Amarnath Vedere.

A STEMI is one of the most serious types of heart attacks, caused by a complete blockage of a coronary artery. Rapid treatment is critical to restoring blood flow to the heart muscle and improving patient outcomes. With the successful completion of its first STEMI intervention, Florida Coast Medical Center is now equipped to provide an even higher level of emergency cardiac care to patients experiencing severe heart attacks and cardiac emergencies.

“This milestone represents another major step forward in our commitment to providing comprehensive, high-quality cardiovascular care close to home,” said Tyler Sherrill, CEO of Florida Coast Medical Center. “Our team has worked diligently to build the capabilities, infrastructure and expertise needed to care for some of the most critically ill cardiac patients. Completing our first STEMI case demonstrates that patients in our community can receive rapid, advanced heart attack treatment without having to travel outside the region.”

Florida Coast becomes the 2nd STEMI receiving facility in St. Lucie County, which means, faster, local care for patients. By being able to treat these life-threatening events locally with minimal delays, the hospital can help improve outcomes for patients, reducing muscle damage and increasing survival rates.

The hospital works closely with our local first responders, receiving results from the 12-lead EKG from the rescue crew, improving the handoff process, allowing us to begin treating the patient immediately to not only improve outcomes but allow the rescue crew to redeploy faster to continue to save lives in our community.

The achievement follows the recent addition of a second cardiac catheterization laboratory and continued growth of the hospital’s cardiovascular program. The STEMI designation strengthens Florida Coast Medical Center’s ability to provide timely intervention for patients suffering acute cardiac events, including those arriving through emergency medical services.

The hospital’s cardiac catheterization team, emergency department staff, physicians and support personnel collaborated seamlessly to deliver care during the landmark case, reflecting the hospital’s readiness to respond to cardiac emergencies around the clock.

“Every minute matters when treating a STEMI,” said Sherrill. “The ability to quickly diagnose and intervene can make the difference between life and death. This accomplishment reflects the dedication of our physicians, nurses, cardiovascular specialists and support teams who are committed to delivering exceptional care to our patients.”

Since opening in September 2025, Florida Coast Medical Center has continued to expand access to specialized services for residents of St. Lucie County and the surrounding communities. The successful completion of its first STEMI case further advances the hospital’s mission of bringing advanced healthcare services closer to home.
