From WPBF 25 News: Breast cancer survivor urges men to recognize warning signs

Although breast cancer is most often associated with women, men also have breast tissue and can develop the disease, said Dr. Sebastian Lopez, a general surgeon at Florida Coast Medical Center.

“The biggest misconception is that men don’t have breasts and they won’t get cancer,” Lopez said.

Male breast cancer accounts for less than 1% of all breast cancer cases. A man’s lifetime risk of developing the disease is about 1 in 755.

“Just because it never gets talked about doesn’t mean it’s not real,” Lopez said. “The worst thing about breast cancer in males is that it gets ignored long enough that, by the time it gets diagnosed, it’s already at a more advanced stage.”
