Milestone highlights hospital’s experience with advanced, minimally invasive treatment for enlarged prostate

Delray Medical Center is celebrating a significant milestone in men’s health as Christopher Tallman, M.D., has completed 200 Aquablation therapy procedures at the hospital, providing men with an advanced treatment option for benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), commonly known as an enlarged prostate.

BPH is a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate that becomes increasingly common as men age. The condition can cause frequent or urgent urination, difficulty starting urination, a weak urine stream and the feeling that the bladder has not completely emptied. For some men, symptoms can significantly interfere with sleep and everyday activities.

Aquablation therapy is a minimally invasive treatment that uses a heat-free waterjet controlled with robotic technology to remove targeted prostate tissue. The procedure combines real-time imaging with a physician-created treatment plan, allowing the surgeon to identify the tissue that needs to be removed while helping preserve surrounding anatomy.

“Completing 200 Aquablation procedures is an exciting milestone, but what is most rewarding is seeing the difference this treatment can make in the lives of our patients,” said Dr. Tallman. “Many men live with the symptoms of an enlarged prostate for years before seeking treatment. Aquablation therapy can be used to treat prostates across a range of sizes and provides an alternative for appropriate patients who have not experienced sufficient relief from medication or are looking for another option beyond traditional surgical treatments.

The technology allows physicians to map the prostate and determine which tissue should be removed before the waterjet portion of the procedure begins. Once the treatment plan is established, a robotically controlled, heat-free waterjet removes the targeted tissue.
