About Tom Minas
Dr. Minas joined the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute in 2018 after 30 years at Harvard Medical School, where he was a Professor of Orthopedic Surgery. He is a founding member of the ICRS (International Cartilage Repair Society-1997) and present Vice President of the Society. He brought Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation (ACI) to the United States in 1995 from Sweden and has done the most Cartilage Transplants in the world. He has further innovated many surgical techniques to treat osteoarthritis in the young and old arthritic patient and has developed and patented customized individually made knee replacements. His work in patient-specific knee replacement has led to the introduction of a family of tissue preserving, customized implants based on patient-specific imaging data to restore native articulating geometry. Dr. Minas specializes in various procedures. Dr. Minas has published and lectured extensively on cartilage repair and joint preservation of the knee. He has written a textbook, over a dozen book chapters, as well as more than 100 peer-reviewed articles in international journals. Additionally, Dr. Minas has directed multiple international conferences on biologic repair of arthritic joints. He was recently awarded by the America Knee Society the prestigious Insall Award in 2013 for his work on the Long-Term Outcomes assessment of ACI in the knee.

I provided the following review for Dr. Minas via Healthgrades: I was referred to The Paley Institute by Dr. Kevin Stone of The Stone Clinic as I require a knee surgery that is complex - not your standard total knee replacement. I live in Washington State. I had a virtual consult with Dr. Tom Minas on 3-25-2025. Dr. Minas came across as very caring. He listened to me. He was very knowledgeable about the surgery I need and the full treatment needed and shared it in understandable detail. Although he could not perform the surgery at his facility, he provided me names and locations of three experienced orthopedic surgeons on the East Coast who could perform the surgery. His staff offered to send referrals to them if I need that assistance. I am truly thankful I got the opportunity to consult with him. What a blessing!

The first visit after my total knee replacement was this past Monday, three weeks into the procedure. The visit was excellent, they took X-rays and I was able to see my new knee replacement. Dr. Minas explained all of the layers that were dark shadows. I will never have to deal with arthritis in that knee again. A simple miracle.

Everyone was very concerned about me, wanted me to feel comfortable with findings and course of treatment. I have been able to email Liana and Kelleher (don't remember her first name) and answer any questions I may have. I actually emailed Liana after my visit asking her to clarify what the problem was and she got right back to me with an explanation. After my partial replacement, I had emailed her a question as well and she came right back to me answering my concerns and with some feeedback from Dr. Minas. I can't say enough about how great Iiana and Kelleher are!!!!!

Entire team is awesome-nothing more needs to be said. I have had multiple visits because of knee issues. Scheduling, nurses, PA, and Dr. Minas have all been wonderful. This visit was right after fall (luckily fall was right before I was coming in for 3 week follow up). Everyone was so helpful. Nurses and PA were immediately in to see me and make sure I was OK. Ended up needing another MRI, Ash and maybe Jeremy (don't know him) were great in pushing to get insurance approval. Then MRI was able to be read by Minas ASAP and another appiontment scheduled. Came in for follow up appt and needed another surgery to clean things up. Ash was great in getting blood work and surgery approval and was able to get surgery the following day. Surgery center is also top notch, I have had a lot of surgery through the years at HSS, UCSD, Vanderbilt and this by far has been the best experience.

I didn't time anything really. Dr. Minas went over the results with me. Explained how the surgery will be done. Told me an overnight stay was usual, maybe one extra day depending on how things go with me. We scheduled the surgery with Gwen, his administrative assistant and were on our way home. I think everything went very well. They answered any questions that I had and everything went smoothly.

Everyone that we dealt with were friendly and very helpful.Other than the x-rays all went well. Even that little mix-up was fixed quickly. It's a very impressive unit. I am very pleased.

Everything with my surgery went well . I had only wished that I had seen Dr. Minus for an appointment to go over all The ramifications of my upcoming surgery.. I did not realize how incapacitated I would be and the amount of pain related to this surgery, otherwise I think he did a great job n the hospital staff could not have been nicer And totally accommodating.
