As a board-certified and fellowship-trained neurosurgeon and spine surgeon, Scott Raffa, MD, arrives at Cantor Spine Center at the Paley Orthopedic & Spine Institute to further serve his local hometown communities. Dr. Raffa attended medical school and residency in Neurological Surgery at the University of South Florida Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, FL. After completing his Master’s of Business Administration through the University of Florida, Dr. Raffa completed a post-graduate fellowship in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery at the University of Miami at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, FL. Disorders treated include neck and back pain, sciatica/pinched nerves, spinal stenosis, herniated and slipped discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis, pars defects, spondylosis, spine trauma, spinal deformity, cervical myelopathy and kyphosis, tumors of the spine and spinal cord, spinal instability, spinal cord compression, and many more. Dr. Raffa also specializes in a variety of minimally invasive surgical techniques, including lateral and endoscopic approaches to the spinal column, complemented with use of the latest technologies such as intraoperative neuro-navigation imaging, neuromonitoring. Additional interests include minimally invasive and same-day spine surgery, outpatient and ambulatory spine surgery. Dr. Raffa’s “Safety First” approach is unwavering. This approach involves a larger discussion on quality of life, and seeks to exhaust all options before surgery is discussed. I think for some spinal conditions, this group of doctors may be better than others. I was attracted by a YouTube video explaining the ultrasonic scalpel and how well it worked to eliminate arthritis. Dr. Raffa did explain to me that the procedure I probably needed (ACDF) would be locally provided by local doctors and there would not be great benefit in me traveling from Iowa to have this done, so in this respect, he did me a great favor. Due to traffic problems that I ran into, I was running a few minutes late. I was getting ready to reach out to the office staff to notify them of my problem when my phone rang I was thrilled that it was one of the nurses reaching out to me to notify me that she observed that I did not respond to an email that was sent to me with a schedule Radiology appointment, and this X-ray needed to be done prior to seeing the Dr. I did not review that email; therefore, I was not aware that I had that appointment. The nurse reassured me that it was OK, she will notify the radiology department that I am on my way, and they are waiting for me. I was extremely surprised how accommodating the staff members were. I was allowed to check in For my doctor's appointment, then the staff member called a golf cart to escort for me to the radiology building. The check-in process there was extremely smooth as well. My wait time was Approximately 10 minutes for my radiologist study. Once my X-ray was completed, the golf cart was outside waiting for me to take me back to my doctors appointment. My appointment went so smoothly, from the professionalism and Courtesy front desk staff, to the Excellent bedside manners of the physician. The only negative experience have had was finding somewhere to park. But that was quickly erased once I realized that I could Utilize Free valet parking! So essentially, I did not have a negative experience at all!

I was impressed by the amount of time Dr. Raffa spent questioning me about my cervical stenosis problem. He also did a complete job of reviewing my imaging and explaining my issue. He concluded that foraminotomy was "reasonable" in my case and put me at ease by thoroughly reviewing the surgery and recovery. I'm fortunate to have the opportunity to have him work on my cervical spine.
