Neurotrauma

In Neurotrauma cases, time is of the essence; delays in care could lead to permanent brain damage, paralysis, or even death. The Trauma Centers understand the importance of time and offer neurotrauma care 24/7 every day of the year. 

Delray Medical Center and St. Mary’s Medical Center are the two state designated Trauma Centers in Palm Beach County. Our centers partner with the Palm Beach County Healthcare District and area Emergency Medical Service (EMS) professionals to provide lifesaving emergency and trauma services to our community. 

Injuries to the central nervous system resulting in traumatic brain injury (TBI) or spinal cord injury (SCI) are the types of injury most likely to result in lifelong disability or death. Each year in the United States, about 1.7 million people sustain a traumatic brain injury and 11,000 new spinal cord injuries occur. 

For any type of suspected injury to the brain or spinal cord, patients are quickly evaluated. Prior to the patient’s arrival, our trauma teams work with EMS professionals in order to receive critical information on the patient’s condition. This information allows our centers and team to have specific evaluation and treatment options available upon the patient’s arrival. 

The interdisciplinary team approach integrates some of the latest medical, surgical and rehabilitative therapies. The neuro trauma team consists of trauma physicians and surgeons, neurosurgeons, neurologists, critical care and internal medicine physicians, specialized nurses and therapists, and rehabilitation professionals.
