Pelvic Floor Medicine

Pelvic Floor Medicine is a specialty that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of pelvic floor disorders. Pelvic floor disorders affect the group of muscles that support the opening of a woman’s pelvis. The muscles and surrounding connective tissues hold a woman’s pelvic organs in place and keep them functioning correctly. Over time or due to childbirth, surgery, or injury, these muscles or connective tissues can weaken or become damaged, which can result in a pelvic floor disorder. It’s important to know that if you are experiencing issues such as increased frequency and urgency to urinate or pain and discomfort in the pelvic region, there’s a team of urogynecological specialists that may have treatment options for you.

Pelvic Health and Rehab Program

The Palm Beach Health Network Rehabilitation programs offer a pelvic health and rehabilitation program for patients suffering from incontinence and/or pain in the pelvic region. This includes abdominals, buttocks, lower back, pelvic floor, coccyx, vagina and rectum. Pelvic floor muscles may become weak, tight or spastic, as a result of disease, surgery, childbirth or other trauma. Specialized physical therapists work with you to evaluate the cause of your pain or limitation in function. They perform an initial evaluation and develop a program to address your needs.

  • Pelvic floor muscle stimulation
  • Biofeedback
  • Internal and/or external therapeutic massage and myofascial release
  • Postural exercises
  • Education in bladder retraining, dietary irritants, anatomy, relaxation techniques, and diaphragmatic breathing
  • Development of an individualized home exercise plan
