Treatment Options for the Center

Minimally Invasive / Endoscopic Therapies

  • Transoral Incisionless Fundoplication (TIF)
    • A procedure to reconstruct or reinforce the barrier at the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) using an endoscope.
  • Radiofrequency (RF) Therapy (Stretta)
    • Uses radiofrequency energy to remodel tissue at the LES, potentially reducing reflux
  • Ablation Therapies for Barrett’s Esophagus
    • Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA): Heat-based therapy to remove abnormal Barrett’s tissue.
    • Cryotherapy: Uses freezing to eradicate precancerous tissue.
    • Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR): To remove larger or localized early lesions.
  • Endoscopic Tumor Removal or Resection
    • For early-stage cancers or pre-cancerous lesions in the esophagus or stomach.
  • Stent Placement
    • Self-expanding metallic stents can be placed to open up narrowed or obstructed areas of the esophagus.

Surgical Treatments

  • Antireflux Surgery (Fundoplication)
    • Nissen Fundoplication: The top part of the stomach is wrapped completely around the lower esophagus to prevent reflux
    • Toupet (Partial) Fundoplication: A partial wrap, used in selected patients.
  • Myotomy
    • Cutting the esophageal muscle (e.g., Heller myotomy) in motility disorders like achalasia to help relax the sphincter.
  • Minimally Invasive Surgery
    • Many surgical interventions are done with minimally invasive techniques to reduce recovery time.
