Lung Cancer Screenings

PBHN offers a potentially life-saving opportunity for current and former smokers to be screened for early detection of lung cancer. The goal is to diagnose and treat lung cancer at an early stage, when it may be easier to treat and possibly cure.

You may be a candidate if you meet these criteria

  • Age 50–80 (or 55–77 for Medicare Part B)
  • Current smoker, or smoked within the past 15 years
  • Smoking history of at least 20 pack-years

What is a lung cancer screening?

Lung cancer screening looks for signs of lung cancer before symptoms appear. A low-dose CT scan is the recommended screening test. Screening supports earlier diagnosis and treatment and may slow or stop cancer progression. Many lung cancer deaths can be prevented by screening high-risk people every year.

Why is lung cancer screening important?

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among men and women in the United States, with more deaths than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. Advances in technology and research have created proven ways to screen for lung cancer at its earliest stages.

What Is Lung Cancer?

There are two major types of lung cancer, and it’s important to know which you have because they behave differently and have different treatment options. Because early stages often have no symptoms, it’s common for lung cancer to spread (metastasize) before diagnosis—another reason screening and timely evaluation matter.

  • Non–Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC): The most common type; more than 80% of cases. It usually grows slowly and can have few symptoms until advanced.
  • Small Cell Lung Cancer: About 10–15% of cases; grows quickly and spreads rapidly to lymph nodes and other areas.

No two cancers are exactly alike. Our physicians, nurses, and clinicians will help shape a treatment plan as unique as you are. You’ll have ongoing access to your team so you can review results, understand your diagnosis, and participate in developing your treatment plan.
