Artificial Intelligence (Augmented Reality)

Delray Medical Center is the first hospital in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast to use the innovative Medivis medical imaging technology during brain surgery. The first procedure using the new technology was performed by Lloyd Zucker, MD, the hospital’s Chief of Neurosurgery.

Medivis describes its technology as a “virtual GPS system” for surgeons to help them navigate complex anatomical landscapes, like the brain, during procedures. It is designed to give them a more accurate, intuitive understanding of the anatomy on which they are operating.

The technology uses augmented reality (AR) and artificial intelligence (AI) to translate complex two-dimensional medical imaging such as MRIs and CT scans into three-dimensional, interactive renderings. Using an AR headset, the surgeon can then view these visualizations superimposed or overlaid on the area of the patient’s body that is being operated on, in real time, at the bedside.

“We are excited to be able to offer this groundbreaking technology that is designed to help us operate more accurately and more precisely, while maximizing patient outcomes,” said Dr. Zucker. “This is yet another example of our commitment to invest in advanced treatments and technology to enhance the health and well-being of our communities.”

Dr. Zucker, a board-certified neurosurgeon, has more than 30 years of experience diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the brain and spine. He earned his undergraduate degree with honors at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and his medical degree at the Rutgers University School of Dental Medicine (formerly the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey) in Newark.

Before entering private practice, Dr. Zucker completed a neurosurgical residency at the University of Connecticut - Hartford Hospital in Hartford and a spinal surgery fellowship at the University of South Florida - Tampa General Hospital in Tampa.
