What Is Neurorehabilitation?

Neurorehabilitation is a physician-referred comprehensive program designed for patients who require support or recovery time following a traumatic brain injury, neurosurgery, stroke or progressive neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease. Neurorehabilitation can help motor and language recovery and overall well-being of patients.

Common Disorders that Can Benefit from Neurorehabilitation:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) - also called Lou Gehrig's disease, a group of rare and progressive neurological diseases that affects the nerve cells or neurons that are responsible for controlling voluntary muscle movement like chewing, walking and talking. There is no cure yet for ALS and no effective treatment to stop or reverse the progression of this disease.
  • Alzheimer's disease - an irreversible and progressive neurological disorder that slowly destroys a person's memory, thinking skills and ability to carry out the simplest tasks. Alzheimer's is the most common cause of dementia among older adults.
  • Multiple Sclerosis - a disease of the nervous system that involves the myelin sheath, the material that surrounds and protects the nerve cells. Once damaged, it slows down or blocks messages between the brain and the body. Symptoms include visual disturbances, muscle weakness, trouble with coordination and balance, sensations such as numbness and prickling as well as thinking and memory problems.
  • Parkinson's disease - a type of movement disorder that occurs when nerve cells in the brain do not produce enough dopamine. Symptoms begin gradually which includes trembling; stiffness of the arms, legs and trunk; slowness of movement and poor balance and coordination. Exposure to occupational chemicals may increase the risk for developing Parkinson's disease.
  • Brain and spinal cord injuries
  • Stroke
  • Tremor

Types of treatments may include:

  • Assistive tools, equipment and products that help people who have lost mobility. Common examples of assistive tools include crutches, prostheses, orthoses, wheelchairs and tricycles
  • Nutritional counseling
  • Treatment for pain
  • Cryotherapy and thermotherapy - treats musculoskeletal pain and swelling
  • Exercise therapy including strengthening, mobility or balance-building exercises
  • Electrical stimulation to treat pain
  • Traction - takes the pressure off compressed or damaged joints
  • Hydrotherapy – uses water therapy such as performing exercises in a pool or whirlpool
  • Soft tissue manipulation – helps reduce pain and decrease muscle tension through the use of hands-on techniques on the muscles, ligaments and fascia to optimize function
  • Joint mobilization – a manual technique where a therapist moves your joint firmly and carefully in the desired direction
  • Kinesiology taping – the application of therapeutic adhesive tapes to specific areas of the body to decompress trigger points, boost circulation, improve lymphatic drainage and reduce pain and inflammation
